Services are scheduled at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, January 29 at Terpening Son Mortuary in Artesia, N.M. for longtime Artesia resident Writa M. Hammond of Lovington, New Mexico. Mrs. Hammond, 94, died Monday, January 27, 2003 at Nor-Lea General Hospital in Lovington. Michael Lynn Hammond, a grandson, will officiate at the services with burial at Woodbine Cemetery. Mrs. Hammonds grandsons will serve as pallbearers. She was born March 21, 1908 in Terra Haute, Indiana; the daughter of Henry Clay Baker and Della Mae Price Baker. On November 17, 1923 she was married to James Hobert Hammond in Ardmore, Okla. They came to Artesia from Oklahoma in 1925. Her husband preceded her in death June 15, 1982. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a daughter Georgia Buck; and by three brothers; and three sisters. She was a housewife. Survivors include sons Charlie Hammond of Carlsbad, N.M., and J. 0. Hammond, John Hammond and Frank Hammond all of Artesia; daughters Ruth Adams of Ruidoso, N.M. and Louise Sherman of Lovington; a sister Carrie Harris of East St. Louis, Illinois; sisters-in-law Elizabeth Collins and Ann Hammond both of Roswell, N.M.; 23 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; and 17 great-great-grandchildren. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society - 1404 N. Kentucky - Roswell, NM 88201.
