William Sweatt

William Jack "Bill" Sweatt, 84, of Artesia, NM went home with Jesus on Monday, October 29, 2018 while surrounded by his loving family. Funeral services are scheduled for 11am Saturday, November 3, 2018 at Hermosa Church of Christ in Artesia with Mr. Ricky Ellis officiating. Interment will follow at the Hagerman Cemetery in Hagerman, NM. Visitation will be at Terpening and Son Mortuary on Friday, November 2, 2018 from 10am to 8pm. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home from 4pm to 7pm.

Bill was a greatly respected Pecos Valley business leader, operating Sweatt Construction in the Artesia area for over 50 years, as well as other ventures across New Mexico and Texas. He truly enjoyed solving puzzling business problems. Bill Sweatt was a generous philanthropist supporting Eddy County Fair, Paws and Claws Humane Society, Artesia Animal Shelter, March of Dimes and many more. Many individuals credit Mr. Sweatt with setting them on the road to success. He was especially concerned with providing for the needy. Bill loved a good joke and he loved and provided for his children as well as all of his family. His gruff exterior highlighted one of the most kind-hearted of men.

Mr. Sweatt was born in Roswell, NM and was a life-long resident of the Artesia area. He is preceded in death by his parents, C. Van Sweatt and Violet Woodmas Sweatt, two grandsons and his first wife, Gwen Hammons Sweatt.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda Sweatt, of the home, his brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Shirley Sweatt of Titusville, FL and his sister and brother-in-law, Marlene and Ray Vestal of El Reno, OK. His daughters and sons-in-law are Sandra and Bill Trainor of College Station, TX and Beverly Sweatt-Wilson and Seth Wilson of Artesia, NM. His stepsons and their wives are Ken and Irene Livingston of Lincoln, NM, Robert and Janet Livingston of Artesia, NM and Kirk and Janis Livingston of Austin, TX. Bill is survived by 11 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren. He is also survived by countless cousins, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Serving as pallbearers are Bill Dampeer, Doug Fortner, Johnny Lopez, Miguel Madrid, Tate May, Daniel Vestal, Donald Vestal and Doug Vestal. Honorary pallbearers include Sheryl Baker, Ronnie Bartlett, Ken Clayton, J. T. Jackson, Ken Livingston, Kirk Livingston, Robert Livingston, Wesley Menefee, Archie Tidwell, Jane Wiggins and Sweatt Construction Employees.

The family would like to thank the many care givers who assisted with their wonderful skills for Bill.
