A Celebration of life service is scheduled at 11 am Saturday, October 26, at Hermosa Church of Christ for longtime Artesia resident, Wanda Fay Maupin. Wanda passed from this life and into the arms of Jesus on Monday, October 21, 2024 in Lubbock, TX. Jeremy Maupin will officiate the services. A visitation and viewing will be held Friday, October 25, 2024, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Hermosa Church of Christ .
Wanda Fay Sewell was born July 12, 1933 in Uvalde, TX to Annie Laura Reeves Sewell and Chappel Clayton Sewell. She lived in several towns in Arkansas and Texas during her childhood before graduating from Levelland High School at the age of 16.
Wanda married James Howard Maupin on August 28, 1950 in Levelland, TX. Wanda and James moved to Artesia in 1951, where they began their family and start of retail business with the opening of the White Auto Store in Artesia.
She was a faithful and active member of Hermosa Church of Christ and was always very involved in church activities. One of her most memorable roles was serving as “Grandmother Goose” every year at VBS, telling and acting out the Bible stories for the kids. She was a long-time member of the Artesia Hospital Auxiliary and Red Hatters Society.
Wanda is survived by her sons, Dennis and Betty, and Terry and Donna; grandchildren Chris and Kimmy Hawthorne, Paul and Elizabeth Maupin, Charles and Stephanie Maupin, David and Allie Maupin, Terah Maupin Sexton, Jeremy and Nicole Maupin, Julie and Derek Washicheck, and Jamie and Derek Montoya; great-grandchildren Addeline Hawthorne, McClain and Bradford Maupin, Lucy, Lily and Jett Maupin, Davey, Grady, Stevie and Charlie Maupin, Brooks, Tripp and Kadence Sexton, Finley and Callaway Maupin; Grayden and Braelyn Washichek; Kion, Kamden and Keyana Montoya.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Maupin, son Charles Clinton Maupin, daughter Jamie Fay Hawthorne, and her granddaughter Laura Nadee Hawthorne. Additionally, she was preceded in death by her parents and five siblings.
Memorial contributions may be made to the New Mexico Christian Children’s Home in Portales, NM or the Hermosa Church of Christ Benevolence Fund in lieu of flowers.
