Walter Bynum

March 21, 1923 — June 18, 2018

Memorial services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 28 at West Main Baptist Church for Walter H. Bynum of Lakewood, California.

Mr. Bynum, 95, passed away on June 18, 2018 at his home.

Pastor Jason Kraft will officiate at the service. Cremation has taken place.

Walter was born on March 21, 1923 in Otis, New Mexico; the son of Richard L. and Ela Leslie (Davis) Bynum. On June 20, 1943 he married Virgie Lea Holley in Artesia, NM. She preceded him in death on October 2, 2001.

Walter graduated from Artesia High School and came back to be a teacher and coach after he graduated college at Hardin-Simmons University. Mr. Bynum coached the Bulldogs to their first State Championship in 1957. He taught at Artesia High School for 11 years. He served in the United States Army Air Corp during WWII and was a member of the 449th Bomber Group. The Bynum's moved to California in September 1963. In California he taught and coached at Rolling Hills High School for 33 years. After retiring he volunteered on his daughter's Tumble Bus which was a mobile gymnastics program. He loved sports, he loved his grandchildren and pets and all animals. Walter enjoyed reading the Sunday comics and writing letters and for enjoyment sharing stories of his travels abroad.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Jimmy Bynum and Leroy Bynum.

Survivors include his daughters Judy Carpenter of Knoxville, TN and Rayma Powers of Lakewood, CA; brother Bill Bynum of Roswell, NM; 3 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.
