Services are scheduled at 10:00 A.M. Friday, April 5 at First Presbyterian Church for William Herbert Howell, 1009 Runyan Ave., Artesia, New Mexico. Mr. Howell, 89, died Monday, April 1, 2002 in Artesia. Rev. John Mills, Jr. will officiate at the services with burial at Woodbine Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Herbert Pettit, Warren Pettit, Craig Russell, Chad Russell, Larry Parker and Wade Irby. Mr. Howell was born October 15, 1912 in Lakewood, New Mexico; the son of William Green Howell and Aletha Jeanette Stedman Howell. He was a 1930 graduate of Artesia High School and won the distinction of being the best all-around student for 1930. On February 1, 1934 he was married to Mary Lorene Carder in Artesia. His wife preceded him in death January 5, 2001. He was a retired inspector for Continental Oil and Navajo Refining Company; was a longtime rancher and farmer and had owned and operated Howell Welding. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church and a lifelong member of the Odd Fellows. Mr. Howell was preceded in death by his parents; a sister Beatrice Howell and a great-grandson John David Pettit. Survivors include daughters Helen B. Pettit and husband Gene of Artesia and Dora J. Russell of Sunnyvale, Calif.; grandchildren Herbert E. Pettit and wife Jo of Lexington, Kentucky, Warren R. Pettit and wife Andrea of Hagerman, N.M., Craig W. Russell and wife Becky of Santa Clara, Calif. and Chad W. Russell of San Jose, Calif.; five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church 402 W. Grand Ave. Artesia, NM 88210.
