Virgil Johnson

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 8, 2019 at Hermosa Drive Baptist Church for Virgil Preston Johnson of Artesia, New Mexico.

Mr. Johnson, 98, died September 29, 2019 at San Pedro/Invigorate Nursing Center in Artesia.

Pastor Ty Houghtaling will officiate at the services with burial to follow at Twin Oaks Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Darren Wood, Tracer Wood, Brent Sultemeier, Dakota Bloodworth, Dakota Ferguson, and Ed Gage.

Visitation will be at Terpening & Son Mortuary Monday, October 7 beginning at 2:00 P.M.

Virgil was born February 18, 1921 in Kinder, Louisiana to the son of Amil Johnson and Grace (Hill) Johnson.

He served his country in the United States Army and Air Force.

On June 7, 1941 he was married to Rena Castleberry in Orange, Texas. They came to Artesia in 1965 from Orange.

Virgil retired from Marathon Oil Company and was a longtime member of the Hermosa Drive Baptist Church. He was a member of the VFW and volunteered his time at Sivels Baptist Camp.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Rena Johnson; son-in-law Ron Hale; numerous brothers and sisters; and by a grandson Terry Johnson.

Survivors include daughter Lanell Hale of Capitan, NM; son Lynn Johnson and wife Wanda of Nogal, NM; one sister in Washington State; six grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
