Vertie Simmons

Services are scheduled at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 27, at Centre Ave. Baptist Church for Vertie Simmons of Artesia, New Mexico.

Mrs. Simmons 78, died Thursday, March 22, 2018 in Artesia.

Ed Hickey will officiate at the services with burial at Woodbine Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Rodney Standard, Buddy Simmons, Danny Parker, Larry Shipman, Dennis Davis, Danny Parker, Mike Shannon, Jeff Youtsey and Michael Smedley. Honorary pallbearers will be Randy Scott, Leon Simmons, George Chase Jr., and Chevy Chase. Visitation will be at Terpening & Son Mortuary from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday.

Vertie was born September 21, 1939 in Wellington, Texas; the daughter of William Anderson Randall and Zada Fields Randall.

She came to Artesia in 1958 from Texas. On July 20, 1961 she was married to Virgil Jr. Simmons in Carlsbad, N.M. He preceded her in death on March 20, 1993.

She was a babysitter for many years and helped raise many children. She was a member of Centre Ave. Baptist Church and the Senior Center. She enjoyed ceramics, quilting, bingo and fishing.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Willie Wayne Randall and George Randall.

Survivors include a god-daughter Cassie Whitt of Woodsboro, Texas; sister Mollie Simmons of Artesia; many nieces and nephews including Cindy, Tracey, Janice, Jennifer, Becky, Linda, Sherry, Jodi, James, Timmy, Rodney, Curtis and Buddy.
