V. Guthrie

Graveside services are scheduled at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, July 23, at Woodbine Cemetery for V. H. Bill Guthrie, of Artesia, New Mexico. Mr. Guthrie, 80, died Wednesday, July 20, 2005 at his home. Rev. Leo Pennington will officiate at the services. Honorary pallbearers will be Tim Kidd, Mike Hill, Robert Guthrie, Jeremy Guthrie, Trenton Guthrie, and Sammy Van Atta. Mr. Guthrie was born July 29, 1924 in Oakalla, Texas; the son of Shadrack M. Guthrie and Cora Frances Reavis Guthrie. Mr. Guthrie served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. On Dec. 25, 1943 he was married to Johnnie N. Smith in Lampasas, Texas. He came to Artesia in 1949 from Monahans, Texas. He worked as a Contract Plumber. Mr. Guthrie was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Olan, W.C., and Lavoy Guthrie; and one grandson John Valton Guthrie JR. Survivors include his wife Johnnie Guthrie of the family home; daughter Claudia Hill and husband Mike of Artesia; son John Valton Guthrie SR. and wife Renee of Artesia; brother Leland Guthrie of Leander, Texas; sisters Luvenia Johnston of Lampasas, Texas and Nelda McAndrew of Boise, Idaho; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
