Tom Archibald

Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, January 20, 2018 at First United Methodist Church for Thomas Archibald, 81, of Artesia.

Pastor Monty Leavell will officiate the services. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Carrollton, Missouri in the Archibald family plot.

Visitation will be at Terpening & Son Mortuary Friday beginning at 2:00 p.m. Mrs. Archibald and the family will greet friends at the funeral home from 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Thomas was born October 1, 1936, in Carrollton, Missouri the son of John Q. Archibald and Irene (Davidson) Archibald. His paternal grandparents came from the Isle of Man to Carrollton in 1852, prospered as farmers, educated their children and helped build the town. Tom attended the University of Missouri where he graduated in 1958 with a B.S. in Accounting and worked in St. Louis for the Price Waterhouse CPA firm. Later he obtained an M.B.A. from the University of Georgia and completed all coursework for a Doctorate degree. In June 1959 he married Miriam Reed of St. Louis, Missouri also a University of Missouri graduate. He served in the US Army for 22 years. He and his family lived at 6-8 military posts in the USA, to include four years at the US Military Academy, West Point NY, three years in Germany and three years in Belgium. Tom served in Vietnam at the rank of Major with the 23rd Infantry Division, Chu Lai. Tom was promoted to Lt. Col. in Nov 1975 and selected for promotion to Colonel in 1980, but decided to retire.

Upon military retirement, Thomas worked at the Vice President level for various universities for another 22 years. Among those schools were Southern Methodist University, the University of Georgia, University of Central Missouri and Valdosta State University, Valdosta, Georgia. He and his wife Miriam both retired In 2002 from the University System of Georgia and moved to Artesia to be near their oldest daughter and two granddaughters. Locally Tom was referred to by one group as 'Grandpa Tom' and by others as 'the Colonel'. He was active in the First United Methodist Church, served on the Artesia Main Street Board and was very involved around town.

Survivors include wife Miriam (Reed) Archibald, of Artesia; daughter AnnEllse Smith and husband Paul Smith of Artesia; daughter Sarah Alison Archibald of Artesia; granddaughter Matlin Ann Carter, husband Jason Carter and great grandson Cole Carter, all of Colorado Springs, Colorado; granddaughter Sarah Elizabeth Smith of New York City; and granddaughter Brooke Nicole Eymard of Phoenix, Arizona.
