Shawna Elkins Smith, 53; mother, sister, daughter and dear friend to all, passed peacefully on May 5,2018 In San Antonio, TX.
Shawna was born In Pecos, TX on June 11,1964 to Sam and Jeannie Elkins. She attended grade school between Penasco Elementary and Weed High, both nearby the family ranch in Dunken, NM. She later graduated from Artesia High School in 1982, prompting her studies at New Mexico State University. Shawna also attended Flight Attendant School in Miami, PL After college, Shawna married ex-husband, Cullen Smith, and moved south to the Houston, TX area where she raised her two children; son Brannon and daughter Kayla. She owned and operated a local restaurant/gift shop there for several years before moving back to New Mexico in 2007, where she took ownership of her parent's business, The Turquoise Shop, In Cloudcroft, N.M.
An avid traveler, cook, movie-lover and biker; Shawna's real, abiding passions were her family and friends. She sought to instill in her loved ones a zest for life, a commitment to family and friends, and the power of a genuine smile.
Shawna is preceded in death by her beloved parents, Sam and Jeannie Elkins. She is survived by her two children, Brannon Smith of Midland, TX and Kayla Smith of Albuquerque, NM, as well as her two brothers, Alden and Randy Elkins of Pinon, N.M.
The family also wishes to extend their gratitude to the staff at University Hospital and Christus Sister Mary Hospice Center in San Antonio, T.X. for all of their support in her final days.
Funeral services will be held at Penasco Elementary School Auditorium on Saturday May 12, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. with burial to will follow at "The Last Roundup" Cemetery in Dunken, NM. A potluck dinner will be available to anyone who wishes to attend at the Dunken Fire Station after the services.
