Sam Marion Elkins, 78, of Dunken, NM passed away Saturday, January 18, 2014 surrounded by his family. He is survived by his daughter Shawna Smith, son Alden Elkins and wife Tami, and son Randy Elkins and wife Tracy. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 2 greatgrandchildren, and brothers Bill Elkins and Jim Elkins.
Sam was born October 25, 1935 to Mark and Ina Elkins in Bluewater, N.M. He was raided in the Grants, N.M. area before marrying Jeannie Read on January 15, 1959. They lived and worked on various cattle operations before settling in Dunken on their cattle ranch in 1969. Sam and Jeannie have also owned and operated the Turquiose Shop in Cloudcroft, N.M. from 1974 to the present. He served on the PVT board of directors for over 15 years, the Penasco Soil and Water Conservation Board of Directors for over 20 years, as well as holding numerous leadership positions and roles throughout his lifetime. Sam was an incredible asset to his community, a devoted Christian and friend, the great patriarch of his family, and a true cowboy.
Services will be held Friday, January 24, at 2:00 p.m. at the Penasco Elementary School. David Brunson will officiate the services with burial at Dunken Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Stetson Elkins, Bryce Elkins, Ryan Elkins, Brannon Smith, Denny Burnett, Paul Trone, and Michael Ham. Honorary pallbearers will be Dub Cox, Shorty Green, David Chalk, Bill Elkins, Jim Elkins, Sonny Watts, Tommy Danley, Jake Van Winkle, Leon Ham, Don Bennett, Denny Calhoun, Jake Barboa, Stanley Waldrip, and Francisco Rascon.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cowboys for Cancer Research, PO Box 202, Dona Ana, NM 88032.
