Robert Smith

Graveside services are scheduled at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 10, at Twin Oaks Memorial Park for Robert E. Smith of Artesia, New Mexico.

Mr. Smith, 96, died Monday, June 8, 2015 at San Pedro Nursing Center in Artesia, New Mexico.

Michael Joiner will officiate at the services. Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Dodd, J.T. Jackson, Tommy Montgomery, Lynn Tarbet, Lewis Derrick, Larry Young, and Darrel Brown.

Robert was born September 18, 1918 in Granbury, Texas; the son of Millard Smith and Mae (Haney) Smith.

He served his country in the Army Air Corps during World War II as a B17 mechanic.

On Sept. 20,1943 he was married to Mary Bartley in Clayton, N.M. They moved to Artesia in 1960 from Levelland, Texas.

Robert worked as an Operator at a gas plant and was a member of Hermosa Church of Christ. He was an avid outdoorsman including hunting and fishing. He also polished rocks to make jewelry, enjoyed painting and working on stained glass. Robert was a Boy Scout leader for many years and also worked with the Explorer Scouts.

He was preceded in death by his son Robert Smith, a brother Leroy Smith, and a grandson Brian Wade Smith.

Survivors include his spouse Mary Smith of the family home; sons David Smith and wife Janell of Artesia, and Lynn Smith and wife Phyllis of Lovington, N.M.; 6 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and a sister Melba Irving of Walters, Oklahoma.
