Ricky was born May 18,1961 in Albuquerque N.M., the son of James Howes and Beverly (Held) Howes. He was a longtime Artesia resident. He graduated from Merkel High School in 1979. He then attended Howard Panye University with a football scholarship. After college, Rick began a 32-year career as a Heavy Equipment Operator at Najavo Refining Company and retired in 2017.
On March 8th, 1986 Rick was married to Carri Smith in Artesia, New Mexico.
After celebrating their love in marriage, Rick and Carri moved into the house Rick built with his father, James Howes. Rick and Carri had two children, Megan and Heather. One of Rick's biggest joys was to coach his daughters' sports teams. He coached both daughters in basketball and softball community teams.
Rick also loved woodworking, his corvettes, and working as a referee for high school football. Rick would never turn down an invitation to watch sports, especially football. He loved a good meal and his favorite time of year was when he could be together with his whole family at Christmas. He asked the Lord into his heart and lived a life of quiet love and servitude to God's purpose for his life. He was so many things to many different people: husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, friend, and coach.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Beverly Howes, of High Rolls; mother-in-law Donna Burns; and brother-in-laws Donnie Spink and Kevin Smith.
Rick is survived by his wife Carri Howes of Artesia; daughter Heather Williams and husband Ryne of Plano, Texas; daughter Megan Howes and husband Jose of Artesia; granddaughter Gianna Hernandez of Artesia; sister Rhonda Spink of White House, Tennessee; brother Randall Howes of Cross Plains, Tennessee; brother-in-law Donnie Smith of El Dorado, Kansas; and in-laws Carlton and Judy Smith.
Floral arrangements may be sent to Terpening & Son Mortuary or to the family’s home at 285 North 13th Street Artesia, New Mexico.
