Memorial services are scheduled at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 13, 2010 at First Christian Church, Artesia, N.M. for longtime Artesia resident Medora Ruth Hassell Johnson of Santa Fe. Pastor David Grousnick will officiate at the services. A family committal service will be held Saturday afternoon at Woodbine Cemetery.
Medora was born in Redfield, South Dakota, to Earl and Myrtle Hassell on Jan. 28, 1920, and passed away Jan. 21, 2010. Medora was a muchloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father husband, Dorman Johnson her sister, Helen Barrett and her brother, Robert Hassell.
She is survived by her son and daughterinlaw, Max and Marion Johnson of Santa Fe her grandsons: Mark Johnson of Santa Fe, Micah Johnson Jennifer of Santa Fe, and Mitchell Johnson Caitlin of Topeka, Kan. great grandson, Dorman Johnson niece, Pamela Davis of McLean, Va. brothersinlaw, Claud Johnson Kay of Artesia and Don Johnson of Arizona and sisterinlaw, Nawasa Eads of Austin, Texas.
Medora came to New Mexico to attend New Mexico Highlands University on a music scholarship in 1939. In 1940, she met and married Dorman Johnson on Oct. 15. Dorman and Medora were a special pair and will be reunited to again enjoy travel and fishing for the rest of time. She truly enjoyed and loved her children, grandchildren, great grandchild and all other surviving relatives. She will be missed by family and all that knew her.
Medora was an outstanding cook and excelled at baking. Many wellwishers have recalled the foods they particularly enjoyed from her kitchen. Dorman and Medora were wellknown in Artesia for the appliance sales and repair store they operated for many years.
A birthday memorial service will be held at Rosemont Assisted Living Center of Santa Fe, 2961 Galisteo Street, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 30.
