Mattie Newsom

Services are scheduled at 2 p.m. Thursday, December 22, at First Baptist Church for Mattie (Bones) Cornelius Newsom, Jr. Visitation will be at Terpening & Son from 2-6 p.m. on Wednesday. His final resting place will be beside his wife at Woodbine Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Kris Newsom, JD Morriss, Zy Morris's, Jason Shideler, Eric Bell, John Neel.

Newsom, 93, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at home Dec. 17, 2022 in Artesia, New Mexico.

Mattie was born December 28, 1928 to Alice (Ford) and M.C. Newsom, Sr. in Polar, TX. His family moved to Artesia when he was a small boy. Mattie graduated from Hope, NM and enlisted in the Army right out of high school and was stationed in Germany during the Korean War. He married Jewel Dean Lake in 1953 and they were married for 64 years. Mattie and Jewel had two children, Robin Newsom & Paula Jenkinson.

He served as a machinist while in the Army in Germany. He was discharged in 1952 and returned to Hope starting a business in a service station. In 1958 he and Dean moved to Mississippi for him to work on a seismograph crew. They returned to Artesia and started with CVE as a Lineman. He retired from CVE 1991.

Mattie was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church, was a deacon for many years and served the Lord graciously. He spoke of the Lord to anyone who would listen He & Dean loved camping & were members of Good Sam's RV Club and traveled for many years. They also took their grandkids to the nearby mountains for a quick camping getaway. Mattie enjoyed being a handyman doing "widow-work" for all the ladies of the church and their friends. He was a socializer and loved to go to the Senior Center to dance and to the Artesia Meal Site for lunch. Mattie loved to tinker and could fix anything if he had duct tape and epoxy! Dean once said that she never got anything new because he could repair anything old.

Survivors include his son, Robin Newsom (Beverly) of Artesia; daughter Paula Jenkinson of Colorado; a sister Grace Clanton of Rankin, TX; grandchildren Nicholas Elmore, Shelly Shideler (Jason), Amber Bell (Eric), Kodi Morriss (JD), & Kristopher Newsom; 7 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandson; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Jewel Dean; 7 brothers and 3 sisters.
