Mary Winkle

Graveside services are scheduled at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 24, at Avis Cemetery in Weed, New Mexico for Mary Margaret "Peggy" Van Winkle of Avis, New Mexico.

Mrs. Van Winkle, 75, died Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at her home.

Family members will officiate at the services. Honorary pallbearers will be Stetson Elkins, Andrew Van Winkle, Zach Van Winkle, Denny Burnett, and Carter Adams.

Peggy was born July 23, 1939 in Boone County, Kentucky; the daughter of Robert Burkitt and Kathleen (Tooney) Burkitt. She was a longtime Avis resident.

On March 7, 1959 she was married to John L. "Jake" Van Winkle in Juarez, Mexico.

Peggy worked as a High School Librarian and was a member of the Dunken Community Fellowship.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a grandson Jace Van Winkle.

Survivors include her husband Jake Van Winkle of the family home; daughter Tami Elkins and husband Alden of Dunken, N.M.; sons Bob Van Winkle and wife Diane of Roswell, N.M., and Gary Van Winkle of Roswell; 10 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and a sister Sylvia Green of Carlsbad, N.M.
