Marquita Jane Hammond, 86, of Artesia, New Mexico, fell asleep in death on April 2, 2021 at her home, surrounded by her family.
She was born May 1, 1934, in Chillicothe, Texas, to Lenard and Vesta Dunson. She was the fifth of six children. They have all preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband of 69 years, James Hammond. She is also survived by one daughter and four sons and their spouses: Phillip and Becki Hammond of Lake Arthur, New Mexico; Michael and Catherine Hammond of Pueblo, Colorado; Ricky and Belinda Hammond of Artesia; Diane and Bruse DeTemple of Keenesburg, Colorado; and Mark and Legeta Hammond of Artesia. She also is survived by 16 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.
Marquita moved with her parents and siblings from Texas to Indio, California for agricultural work during the 1940's. They later moved to Artesia, New Mexico, where Marquita met James Hammond. They were married on January 21, 1952. For most of their married life, they resided in Artesia, spending a few years in Colorado and Wyoming for work in the oil fields.
She loved her children and grandchildren and they loved her and enjoyed spending time with her. She was a hard worker, very industrious, and a great cook. She loved gardening and her flowers. She enjoyed doing crafts, sewing and upholstering and decorating her home.
In the 1950's, Marquita made a study of the Bible and became one of Jehovah's Witnesses. She was a member of the Artesia, NM congregation for many years.
A graveside service will be held at 2 pm Monday, April 5, Woodbine Cemetery.
