Mae Chapman

Graveside services are scheduled at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 30, at Woodbine Cemetery for Mae Attress Chapman of Artesia, New Mexico. Mrs. Chapman, 94, died Friday, September 26, 2008 at the Landsun Health Service Center in Carlsbad, New Mexico. Jim Barnett will officiate at the services. Visitation will be at Terpening Son Mortuary Monday beginning at 10:00 a.m. Mrs. Chapman was born July 4, 1914 in Muskogee, Oklahoma; the daughter of John Wesley Hayes and Nannie B. Sellers Hayes. She came to Artesia in 1928 from Oklahoma. In June of 1930 she was married to Burdette Davis in Carlsbad. He preceded her in death on May 18, 1956. She later married Ralph H. Chapman on December 31, 1962 in Juarez, Mexico. He preceded her in death January 21, 1991. She was also preceded in death by her parents; brothers Joseph Brady Hayes, and Wesley Houston Buddy Hayes; sisters Claudie Hayes, Clara Ethel Little, and Flossie Anna Holeman; twin children Charlene and El Gene Davis; granddaughter Connie Jo Callaway; and a son-in-law William Neal Morgan. Mae was a Server at the cafeteria for the Artesia School District for 20 years. She was a member of the Sunrise Rebecca Lodge for 27 years and loved to sew and do yard work. Survivors include her daughters Ola Mae Morgan of Artesia, Jo Ann Letcher and husband Sonny of Artesia, and Dana Chavez and husband Dave of Albuquerque, N.M.; son Doyle Davis, Sr. and wife Judy of Artesia; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
