L.J. Cone

Services are scheduled at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 30, at West Main Baptist Church for Luther Jewell Cone of Artesia,, New Mexico.

Mr. Cone, 85, died Tuesday, January 26, 2016 at Good Life in Artesia.

Jason Kraft and Belton Mathews will officiate at the services with burial at Twin Oaks Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be his grandsons and great-grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be the Deacons at West Main Baptist Church.

L.J. was born May 11, 1930 in Abilene, Texas; the son of Luther Robert Cone and Jimmie (Vela) Cone. He came to Artesia in 1976 from Hobbs, NM.

On Sept. 26, 1948 he was married to Glenn Etta Davis in Lubbock, Texas. They came to Artesia in 1976 from Hobbs, N.M. She preceded him in death December 4, 2015. He was also preceded in death by his parents; daughter Janet Deason; a grandchild; a great-grandchild; a brother; and two sisters.

L.J. was a salesman for construction jobs in the oil fields and an active member of West Main Baptist Church. He served as a deacon at church and was a member of the Gideons. He was also a member of the N.R.A, the Quarterhouse Association and loved spending time with his family. L.J. was an avid hunter, and enjoyed riding horses. He rode his horse in the 4th of July Parade for the last 30 years.

Survivors include his sons Robert Cone and wife Susie of Loving, N.M., and Ray Hardy of Lovington, N.M.; daughters Linda Goble of Alma, Arkansas, Carol McNally and husband Mike of Ft. Smith, Arkansas, and Kathy Howard and husband Lee Roy of Artesia; son-in-law Jim Deason of Artesia; sisters Modean McMillan of Enid, Oklahoma, and Nola Mae Green of Austin, Texas; 14 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild.
