Leonardo Velasques

Funeral services are scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 21 at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church for Leonardo R. Velasques of Artesia.

Mr. Velasques, 82, passed away on December 16, 2016 at his home.

Fr. Martin Cornejo will officiate at the service with burial to follow at Twin Oaks Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be his grandchildren Joe Gomez, Connie Westall, Michael Gomez, Mark Velasques, Lino Arredondo and Lance Velasques. Honorary Pallbearers are all other grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, December 20 at Terpening & Son Mortuary from 12:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Leonardo was born on September 23, 1934 in Loving, NM; the son of Maurisio and Atilana (Renteria) Velasques. On August 20, 1954 he married Ansension "Chona" Valdez in Carlsbad, NM. She preceded him in death in March 1996. He was also preceded in death by his parents, a brother and 2 sisters and son-in-law Leo Rivera.

He was a Laborer at the New Mexico State University Agriculture Center. He was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church and enjoyed hunting, fishing, cooking for family and friends, welding, making new friends and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his son Raul Velasques and his wife Felicia of Artesia; daughters Mary Gomez of Artesia, Emma Rivera of Artesia, Nellie Velasques of Roswell, NM, Angie Hernandez and husband Frank of Artesia, Lisa Arredondo of Artesia, Cecilia Rojas and husband Pete of Artesia and Linda Armendarez of Roswell; sisters Petra Santa Maria and Belen Huerta of Visalia, CA; 18 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
