John Van Winkle

Jake Van Winkle 84, affectionately known as "Papa Jake", of Avis, NM passed away Sunday, March 21, 2021 surrounded by his family.

Jake was born September 21,1936 at the family home on Perk Canyon to Earl Van Winkle and Anna Schueltz. He lived his life in the Sacramento Mountains, he loved.

He is survived by his son Bob Van Winkle and wife Mitzi of Midland, Texas, son Gary Van Winkle and wife Cathy of Roswell, NM, and daughter Tami Elkins and husband Alden of Dunken, NM. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren, and brother Pete Van Winkle. Jake is preceded in death by his wife Peggy and grandson Jace Van Winkle. He will be greatly missed by his family and all those who knew him.

Services will be held Friday, March 26, at 2:00 p.m. at the Weed Community Center. David Brunson will officiate the services with burial at the Avis Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons and grandsons-in-law. Honorary pallbearers will be Pete Van Winkle, Sherrell Gurley, Bryan Prather, Billy Walker, and Billy Weddle.

Following the burial, the family would like to invite everyone to a potluck sandwich/cookie/dessert fellowship at the Pinon Community Center.
