John Dowell

Graveside services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, April 5, at Woodbine Cemetery for John R. Dowell of Artesia, N.M.

Mr. Dowell, 83, passed away on April 1, 2021.

Ty Houghtaling will officiate at the services. Visitation will be at Terpening & Son Mortuary from 2 - 5 p.m. on Sunday.

John was born September 19, 1937 in Carlsbad, N.M. to Mary Elizabeth Jackson Dowell and A. R. Dowell.

He graduated from Artesia High School in 1955. He married Brenda Whaley in 1959. On March 15, 1993 he retired from PNM Gas Company.

He was a member of First Baptist Church. He spent many happy hours helping at Sivell's Baptist Camp to ready the camp for summer youth activities. He was also very active at the Boy Scout Camp at Sacramento.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers-in-law Nelson Moore and Waydean Whaley.

He is survived by his wife Brenda Dowell; son Stephen Dowell and wife Beth of Artesia; grandson Cody Dowell and wife Ada of Artesia; granddaughter Stephanie Dowell and wife Victoria of Lovington, N.M.; great-granddaughters Gracie Dowell of Whitehouse, Texas, Katie and Kacie Dowell of Artesia; sisters Janette Moore of Bedford, Texas and Rosemary Freemyer of Bozeman, Montana; sister-in-law Ruth Whaley of Boise, Idaho; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
