John Colwell

Services will be held Wednesday November 23, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at Trinity Temple with Rev. Art Cantrell officiating. Burial followed at Twin Oaks Memorial Park. Viewing will be held on Tuesday, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Terpening Son Mortuary. Pallbearers will be Bobby Bishop, Mikey Chavarria, Richard Schultz, Phil Frye, Harry Wesson, Guy Chavarria, and Shane Baker. Honorary pallbearers will be Johns grandsons and all other local law enforcement officers who served with or knew John. John P. Colwell, of Artesia passed away at his home surrounded by his family. He was born October 8, 1929 in Vance, Texas to W.F. and Francis Fanny B. Colwell. He married Doris Hummel on May 31, 1970. John came to Artesia in 1961 and worked as a manager at Safeway. In March of 1968 he became a police officer for the Artesia Police Department. He retired after 27 years of service in 1995. He also was owner and operator of Colwell Cycle Center. He was a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge of Alpine, Texas, and a member of the congregation of the Church of God. Survivors include wife Doris of the family home; his sons Perry Colwell of Monahans, Texas, Corky Colwell and wife Karen of Alpine, and Steve Colwell of Artesia; step-sons Billy Hummel of Artesia, and Kenneth Hummel and wife Phyllis of Carlsbad, N.M.; daughters Debbie Dewey and husband Tommie of Artesia, Barbara George of Midland, Texas; son-in-law Mark Campbell of Carlsbad; 14 grandchildren Shanna Garrison, Jinger Clemer and husband Leslie, David Colwell and wife Christina, Levi Colwell, Tammie Jo Lard and husband Arthur, Teri Pinson and husband Matthew, Roy John Dewey and wife Dona, Kenny Dewey, Jenni Dewey, Rodney Campbell, Julie Campbell, Jodi Colwell, David Colwell, and Daniel Colwell; 13 great-grandchildren; brother Billy Colwell of Artesia; sister Glenda Ragland of San Saba, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by father W.F. Colwell, mother Francis Colwell and a sister Lettie Ann Jarrod. The family requests memorials contributions be made to the American Cancer Society or Vista Care Hospice.
