Services are scheduled at 11:00 A.M. Monday, Sept. 15, at Faith Baptist Church for Joan Mena Casto of Artesia, New Mexico.
Mrs. Casto, 81, went home to be with the our Lord Thursday, September 11, 2014 after a lengthy illness.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Terpening Son Mortuary.
Michael Elliott and Cheto Moreno will officiate at the services with burial at Memory Gardens in Hobbs, NM at a later date.
Joan was born May 19, 1933 in Hagerman, New Mexico the daughter of Gerald O. Smith and Vayna McClendon Smith. She came to Artesia in 2003 from Hobbs.
She owned and operated Junction 529 Truck Stop for almost 40 years. As a teenager she attended StampsBaxtor School of Music in Dallas, TX. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church, enjoyed bible studies, tora studies, and playing the piano at Faith and Calvary Baptist Church, The Nazarene Church, Grace Bible Fellowship and Faith Assembly in Hobbs, and anywhere she was invited to play. She loved to sew and quilt. Her family, the Lord, music and friends were her passion.
She was preceded in death by Houston Scott Cavett, a daughter Sonya Cavett, brother Gordon Smith and Paul Smith, sisters Gerladine Trimble, Winnie Dority, June Hampton and Eleanora Johnson and a greatgrandson Clayton Croy.
Survivors include her son Richard Cavett of Hobbs daughters Lana Hencey and husband Milton of Hobbs Tanya Laman and husband Bill of Artesia brother Gerald Smith and wife Bernice of Edgewood, NM 7 grandchildren and 14 greatgrandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Memorial donations may be made to Faith Baptist Church youth group in Artesia or the youth group at Faith Assembly Church in Hobbs, New Mexico, or Encompass Home Health Hospice.
