Jewel and her husband, Mattie C. (Bones) Newsom were married on May 26, 1953 in Carlsbad, New Mexico. She worked for Mountain Bell as a telephone operator for some time. She also worked as a nurse's aide and sales clerk in the Artesia area throughout her life. Jewel's most joyous times were raising her two children and having her grandchildren around. She and Bones traveled with the Sam's RV Club after they retired and got to see many places in the United States.
She was an active member of First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years. She loved to do plastic canvas, painting, cross stitch, and was even a beautiful cake maker when she was younger. She was a collector of gnomes (only because her son bought them every Mother's Day for years) and has a gorgeous gnome garden.
Jewel is survived by her husband Mattie of Artesia; son Robin Newsom and wife Beverly of Artesia; daughter Paula Jenkinson and husband Micky of Ignacio, Colorado; grandchildren Nick Elmore and wife Nesha of Hugo, OK, Shelly Shideler and husband Jason of Ignacio, Amber Thornton and fiance Eric Bell of Artesia, Kodi Morriss and husband JD of Lubbock, Texas, Kristopher Newsom and wife Julie of Artesia and 10 great-grandchildren. She has one brother James Mansell and wife Dee, sister-in-law Grace Clanton and by numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her sister Pauline Lake, brothers Bob and Wayne Mansell, nephew Bruce Mansell and niece Ebony Smith
