Services are scheduled at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, March 5 at Terpening Son Mortuary for Jesus P. Chavez, Artesia, New Mexico. Mr. Chavez, 87, died Saturday, March 1, 2003 in Fort Bayard, New Mexico. Richard B. Leaton will officiate at the services with burial at Woodbine Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Arturo Chavez, Oscar Batte, Javier Chavez, Robert Lintz, Jaime Wesson and John Wesson. Honorary pallbearers will be Luis R. Chavez, Alfredo Chavez, and Kristopher Lintz. Mr. Chavez was born March 18, 1915 in Barrancos de Guadalupe, Mexico; the son of Salome Chavez and Dolores Paz Chavez. On August 9, 1941 he was married to Nieves Venegas in Coyame, Chihuahua, Mexico. They came to Artesia in 1963 from Ojinaga, Mexico. He was a farm and ranch laborer and attended the Jehovahs Witnesses church. He was preceded in death by his parents; and by three brothers and three sisters. Survivors include his wife Nieves Chavez of Artesia; sons Luis R. Chavez and wife Virginia of Artesia, Alfredo Chavez and wife Mary of Brownfield, Texas, Arturo Chavez and wife Lenora of Artesia, Oscar Batte of Alpine, Calif., and Javier Chavez of Dexter, N.M.; daughters Rosa Cervantez and husband Benito of Fort Stockton, Texas, Maria E. Wesson of Artesia, and Elida Lintz and husband Robert of Artesia; a sister Consuelo De Los Santos of Carlsbad, N.M.; 26 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will be receiving friends at 1905 W. Hermosa Dr.
