Graveside services are scheduled at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2012 at Woodbine Cemetery for Jean M. Terpening, 4903 Eastwind Rd., Artesia, New Mexico. Rev. Monty Leavell will officiate at the services.
Mrs. Terpening, 82, died Friday, August 17, 2012 at home surrounded by her family.
Jean was born March 27, 1930 in McAllen, Texas the daughter of Curtis Mitchell and Mabel Higgins Mitchell. The family moved to James Canyon near Cloudcroft, N.M. in 1933. She graduated from High School in 1948 and attended college in Las Cruces, N.M.
On June 1, 1952 she was married to Calvin D. Terpening in Alamogordo, NM. They came from Hobbs to Artesia in 1954. Together, they owned and operated Terpening Son Mortuary. Cal preceded her in death Dec. 12, 1999.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church, and enjoyed sewing, knitting, fishing, and playing pinochle.
Survivors include her son Jerry Terpening and wife Nancy of Artesia her daughter Susan Francis and husband James of Hobbs, N.M. her adopted children Barbara and Jim Little of Mineola, Texas; brothers Bob Mitchell and wife Jo of Seattle, Wash. and Richard Mitchell and wife Deniece of Cloudcroft; grandchildren Amanda Duke and husband Zeke of Knox City, Texas, Becky Terpening of Artesia, Barbara Yehl and husband Warren of Brownwood, Texas, Paul Francis and wife Stephanie of Lewisville, Texas and Karen McReynolds and husband Conner of Hobbs; great-grandchildren Daniel and Jonah Duke, Wesley and Eugene Francis, and Henry and Miriam Yehl and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to First United Methodist Church, PO Box 1492, Artesia, NM 88211 or to a charity of choice.P
