Memorial services are scheduled at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, March 5 at the Hermosa Drive Church of Christ for longtime businessman James H. Maupin of Artesia, New Mexico. Mr. Maupin passed from this life Wednesday, March 2, 2011 at Artesia General Hospital. Michael Joiner will officiate the services. No visitation is planned.
James Howard Maupin was born April 29, 1929, in Turkey, Texas, to G.C. and Dora Nadee Maupin.
He graduated from Lubbock High School in 1946 and then attended two years at Texas Tech University. He served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953.
James married Wanda Fay Sewell on August 28, 1950, in Levelland, Texas. He went to work for his dad at the Whites Auto Store in Levelland until 1951 when he and Wanda moved to Artesia to open the Whites Auto Store in Artesia with his dad and brother.
James is survived by his wife, Wanda his sons, Dennis and Betty, and Terry and Donna grandchildren Chris and Kimmy Hawthorne, Paul and Elizabeth Maupin and McClain, Charles and Stephanie Maupin and Lucy, David and Allie Maupin, Terah and Chance Sexton, Jeremy and Nicole Maupin, Julie and Derek Washichek, and Jamie Maupin.
He was predeceased by his son, Charles Clinton Maupin his daughter, Jamie Fay Hawthorne and his granddaughter, Laura Nadee Hawthorne. Additionally, he was predeceased by his parents, two sisters and three brothers.
Mr. Maupin was proud to have been an Artesia businessman for over 60 years. Throughout his career he owned hardware, furniture, tires and appliance stores, and the Heritage Inn Bed and Breakfast. Finding he wasnt suited for retirement, Mr. Maupin obtained his realtors license as a second career. Upon retiring from real estate, Mr. Maupin greeted friends and customers at Terrys Electronics Home Center.
Mr. Maupin was a faithful member and deacon of the Hermosa Drive Church of Christ, where he taught many Bible studies. He was honored by the Chamber of Commerce as Businessman of the Year in the early 1980s.
