Irene Melendez

Services are scheduled at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28, at First Baptist Church for Irene Garcia Melendez of Artesia, New Mexico.

Mrs. Melendez, 91, died Friday, August 24, 2012 at Heartland Nursing Center in Artesia.

Pastor Abelardo Bolanos will officiate at the services with burial at Twin Oaks Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Anthony Mariscal, Jaime Mariscal, Daniel Mariscal, Joe Vince Ruiz, Erik McCormick, and Gabriel Mariscal.

Visitation will be at Terpening Son Mortuary Monday beginning at 2:00 p.m.

Irene was born August 29, 1920 in Marfa, Texas the daughter of Manuel Garcia and Raquel Medel Garcia.

In 1946 she was married to Jose Melendez in Texas. They came to Artesia in 1948 from Lubbock, Texas. He preceded her in death November 10, 2005. She was also preceded in death by her parents 2 brothers 2 sisters and a son Richard Melendez.

Irene was a homemaker and a member of Primera Iglesia Bautista Church. She also enjoyed playing bingo, watching line dancing, and cooking.

Survivors include her daughters Elia Mariscal and husband Joe of Artesia, Sylvia Ruiz and husband Joe of Artesia, and Susan Aguilera and husband Jorge of Houston, Texas sister Virginia Lara of El Paso, Texas 8 grandchildren 13 greatgrandchildren and a greatgreatgrandson.
