She married John Henry Young, Jr., May 29, 1938, in Twitty, Texas. Mr. Young preceded her in death in April 1985. Mrs. Young grew up in Shamrock, Texas, and earned her bachelors degree from Texas Tech University. The family lived in Groom and Crane, Texas, before moving to Loco Hills, N.M., followed by Artesia, where she lived most of her adult life. Most recently, she lived near Waco, Texas. Throughout her life she loved to learn, teach, and give of herself. She earned sewing awards while in the 4H Club in high school and taught others in her family sewing techniques. She began her teaching career at the age of 19 in Hackberry, Texas, after attending college one year at what is now West Texas AM University in Canyon, Texas. After the family moved to Artesia, she taught a number of years at Central School. She especially loved her second graders, whom she taught from 1963 to 1972. After her retirement she belonged to the Retired Teachers Association and enjoyed numerous activities within the community, especially involved with music. Church was always an important part of her life. While she and her husband lived in Loco Hills, they helped to start the Baptist church, which met in their home. In Artesia she was a faithful longtime member at First Baptist Church, where she taught junior girls Sunday school for about 20 years. She later taught Sunday school to senior adults. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Dwayne Young, of Artesia; a grandson, David Young, of California; and two sisters and a brother. She is survived by one son, Dean Max Young, and wife, Joy, of Waco, Texas; grandchildren Phil and Alissa Young, of Waco; Dea Young-Smith and husband, Eric Smith, of Tucson, Arizona; and John Henry Young, III, of New York, New York.
