Howard Mathesen

Memorial services are scheduled at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, December 4, at Artesia Elks Lodge for Howard Olen Mathesen, 3301 Old Cavern Highway, Carlsbad, New Mexico. Mr. Mathesen, 70, died Monday, November 26, 2007 at his home. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Terpening Son Mortuary. Mr. Mathesen was born October 7, 1937 in Genoa, Colorado; the son of Hans Andrew Mathesen and Grace Lenora Johnson Mathesen. He came to Artesia in 1989 from Denver Colorado. On Dec. 13, 1991 he was married to Carol Rensch in Roswell, NM. He owned and operated Double DJ Store and Wings Restaurant. He was a member of Artesia Elks Lodge 1717, wonderful father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He served in the U. S. Navy. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Mildred Cummings. Survivors include his wife Carol Mathesen of the family home; longtime devoted friend Donnie Garthwaite of Artesia; daughters Gail Wills and husband Bear of Artesia, Glenda Collins and husband Bill of Artesia, Joleen Menix and husband Karl of Wolfforth, Texas, and Deanna Teel and husband Mike of Stratford, Oklahoma; step-daughters Tracie Armendariz of Carlsbad, and Shelby Phillipi and husband Doug of Carlsbad; brother Gorden Mathesen of Flagler, Colorado; and sister Marie Garnhart of Elizabeth, Colorado. Also surviving are grandchildren Nicole Givens and husband Brian of Albuquerque, N.M., Doug Collins and wife Kristen of Artesia, John Teel of Denver, Colorado, Jayd Collins and wife Jessica of Artesia, Janelle Iczkowski and husband Brad of Artesia, Joshua Kelley of Denver City, Texas, Amanda Teel of Artesia, Desirae Collins of Portales, N.M., Deidra McKinney of Artesia, Matthew Kelley of Wolfforth, Alex Armendariz of Washington, Katlin Armendariz of Carlsbad, and Bridgette Phillipi of Carlsbad; and great-grandchildren Tyler Givens, Caiden Iczkowski, Kambry Collins, and Gavin Collins.
