Services are scheduled at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 23, at Mayhill Church of Christ, Mayhill, N.M., for Hezzie Jay Powell, 5071 Rio Penasco Road, Hope, New Mexico. PMr. Powell, 80, died Monday, December 21, 2009 at Heart Hospital in Lubbock, Texas. PEddy Coleman and Marlon McWilliams will officate at the services with burial at Elk Cemetery, Elk, New Mexico. Pallbearers will be Jim Bates, Dub Cox, Gary McClain, Jim Ellett, Charlie Mulcock,and Mike Joy. . Honorary pallbearers will be Harvey Taylor, Mel Foley, Bernard Cleve, Cecil Laman, Fred Griffin, Steve Lewis and Joe Gutierrez. Visitation will be at Terpening amp; Son Mortuary beginning at noon on Tuesday. PMr. Powell was born February 10, 1929 in Elk, New Mexico; the son of Hezekiah James Powell and Mellie Mae Hooten Powell. POn Jan. 6, 1952 he was married to Bonnie Ross in Artesia, N.M. He was a lifelong resident of the Penasco River area. PHe was a rancher and member of the Church of Christ, Penasco Volunteer Fire Department for over 50 years, Penasco Soil and Water Conservation District, and a Penasco Valley Telecommunications board member. PHe was preceded in death by his parents, a son Brent Powell, and by sisters Hazel Reeves and Rachel Thompson.
Survivors include his wife Bonnie Powell of the family home; son Jay Powell and wife Kristy of Penasco River, N.M.; grandchildren Justin Powell of Dexter, N.M., Jamie Reed of Las Cruces, N.M., and Bryan Hunter of Albuquerque, N.M.; and great-grandchildren Ajane Powell, Cohen Reed, and Corbin Reed.
