Gwendolyn Gwen Hammons Sweatt went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, October 03, 2011 at the home of her daughter in College Station. Memorial services were at 6 p.m. at A M Church of Christ with Mr. Foree Grove officiating. Funeral services will be in Artesia, NM on Saturday, October 8, 10:00 a.m. at Hermosa Church of Christ with Mr. Jimmy Derrick officiating. Interment will follow in the Hagerman Cemetery in Hagerman, NM. Visitation will be at Terpening Son Mortuary Friday from 4 8 p.m.
Serving as pallbearers are grandson Billy Trainor, grandsonsinlaw Jordan Denning and Thomas Moore, nephews Tom Hammons and Paul Hammons, and cousin Lewis Derrick. Honorary pallbearers include Bill Sweatt, Josie Catano, Tawnya Cole, and great grandsons Trace and Brayden Moore and Jaxon Denning.
Gwen was born on February 9, 1939 in Carlsbad, NM to Roy Hammons and Mattie Derrick Hammons. She graduated from Hagerman High School in 1957 and resided most of her life in Hagerman and Artesia. Gwen loved God, her family, and her friends. In recent years, Gwen moved to Belton, TX where she enjoyed life by the lake and adventures with her good friends Jimmie Jimmerson, Denny and Rita Padgett, Barbara Jennings, and Cathy Pratt until her death.
She was preceded in death by her father, Roy Hammons, and her mother, Mattie Derrick Hammons Rasor.
Survivors include a daughter and soninlaw, Sandra and Bill Trainor of College Station, TX and a daughter, Beverly Sweatt of Artesia, NM. Grand children are Sandi Trainor Moore and husband Thomas Moore of San Antonio, TX Chelsea Trainor Denning and husband Jordan Denning of College Station, TX and Billy Trainor also of College Station, TX. Great grandsons are Trace and Brayden Moore of San Antonio, TX and Jaxon Denning of College Station, TX. Gwen is also survived by her brother and sisterinlaw, Roy and Louise Hammons of Bryan, TX nephew, Tom Hammons and wife, Lorrie of Carrolton, TX and nephew, Paul Hammons and wife, Laura of Bryan, TX. Great nephews are Scott Hammons of Carrolton, TX, and Allen and Ryan Hammons of Bryan, TX. Great niece is Julie Hammons of Carrolton, TX. Gwen is also survived by numerous cousins and friends.
The family would like to thank Hospice Brazos Valley and the Cardiac Care Unit at the College Station Medical Center for the wonderful care they gave to Gwen during the last weeks of her life.
