Services are scheduled at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Mar. 3, at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church for Gregorio Dominguez Onsurez, Artesia, New Mexico.
Mr. Onsurez, 100, died Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at Mission Arch Care Center in Roswell, New Mexico.
Fr. Martin Cornejo will officiate at the services with burial at Woodbine Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Eric Lopez, Efren Lopez, Felipe Onsurez, Armando Onsurez, Augustine Torrez, and Fernando Galindo. Honorary pallbearers will be Roy and Sue Shoemaker and Lorenzo Onsurez.
A rosary is also scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday at Our Lady of Grace Church. Visitation will be at Terpening & Son Mortuary beginning at 10 a.m. Monday
Gregorio was born March 12, 1914 in Carlsbad, New Mexico; the son of Cresencio Onsurez and Rufina (Dominguez) Onsurez. He came to Artesia in 1954 from Arizona.
He was married to Josefina Arras in Guadalupe, Chihuahua, Mexico. She preceded him in death in Nov. 1970.
He was a farm laborer working with several of the farmers in the Cottonwood area for many years and a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church. He loved to garden and shared the vegetables with friends and neighbors, he was known for growing the hottest chile in the neighborhood. He lived in the Billy the Kid era and knew Jim White who discovered the Carlsbad Caverns.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters, 3 brothers and a daughter-in-law Elisa Onsurez .
Survivors include a son Chris Onsurez of Artesia; daughter Carmen Lopez of Artesia; sister Virginia Arras of Sierra Blanca, Texas; grandchildren Lorenzo Onsurez, Felipe Onsurez, Angelica D'Amore, Eric Lopez, Efren Lopez, Graciela Lopez and Rebecca Lopez; 17 reat-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
