Gerald Welch

January 22, 1935 — August 30, 2021

Gerald Edmond Welch, 86, went home to his savior Jesus Christ in the early morning hours of Monday, August 30, 2021 in Roswell, NM with family by his side. Gerald was born in Waterloo, IA., the eldest son of Theodore (Ted) and Hildred (Billie) Welch on January 22, 1935. Gerald had an adventurous childhood with his little brother Ronald, to include being pulled out of a car by opening a rear suicide door while it was in motion, to also being hit by a train after parking a pickup on the tracks to do some fishing and then not being able to move it in time before the train arrived. These events fostered an early, firm belief in Jesus.

He graduated from New Mexico State University (NMSU) and went to work for Physical Science Laboratories (PSL), part of NMSU. While in college, he met his first wife, Nancy. They married in 1960 and moved to Maine for a short time before being transferred to Anchorage, Alaska where they had two sons, Kenneth and Grayson. In later years, Gerald had various jobs working for the church, a health food store, and moving pianos. In October 1989 Gerald married his true love, Esther, whom he had met through the church many years earlier. They moved to Artesia, NM shortly after to help care for Ted and Billie. Together they enjoyed some traveling, but mostly they loved studying and spreading the word of Jesus Christ. Gerald spent hours reading and studying the bible at every opportunity and through many bible studies at different churches around Artesia along with Esther. He lived for Jesus Christ.

Gerald is survived by his two sons, Kenneth (Janine) and Grayson (Carla), grandchildren; Cody, Tanner (Amanda), Kylie, and Novalee Welch, as well as extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ted and Billie, brother Ronald Dean, and his beloved wife Esther, whom he is now reunited with in heaven.

There will be a Celebration of Life service at First Presbyterian Church, 402 W. Grand Ave. in Artesia on Friday, September 3rd at 4 pm. A second service will be held at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Anchorage, Alaska, at a later date.
