He began his association with the Artesia Daily Press in 1955 when at 9 year's old he applied for the position of newspaper carrier. The circulation manager at the time was skeptical he could perform the duties as the open newspaper route was five miles long and he rode a bicycle. He proved him wrong and remained a paperboy until he was offered the position of assistant circulation manager in 1961. He ascended to circulation manager in 1963, advertising manager in 1969, business manager in 1973 and in 1985 was promoted to the title of publisher which he held until retirement.
Gary was a member of the Artesia Downtown Lions Club for many years fulfilling the duties of the clubs Lion Tamer. He was an avid Artesia Bulldog sports fan and enjoyed watching and attending Dallas Cowboy and Oklahoma Sooner football games.
He truly loved spending time with family and friends and for many years could be seen jogging or walking the streets of Artesia, but his true passion was his love for his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and enjoyed sharing the gospel or praying for anyone who would listen.
