Eva Sue was born Dec. 23, 1937, in Ward County, Texas, the daughter of George Ralph and Effie Lee (Warren) Gray.
On March 3, 1956, she married Virgil Emmett Green in Artesia.
Eva Sue worked as a sales clerk at Marsh's for many years and as a special education aide in the Artesia Public Schools system, from which she retired. She and Virgil also owned and operated Green's Bakery at 13th and Hermosa in the 1980s. She was a member of Hermosa Church of Christ.
She was an avid (and vocal) Dallas Cowboy, New York Yankee and Artesia Bulldog fan and enjoyed trying her unusually good luck at the slots and socializing with her many friends. She loved going out to breakfast at Chaos Cafe and to beauty appointments at Jaynie's, taking family vacations to New York-New York Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, and doting on her dogs, Harvey, Sweetness and Shammy.
Eva Sue was a fun and loving Gro Gro to her grandchildren Brienne, Deven and Jorden and also became an honorary Gro Gro to countless numbers of their friends and other local kids over the years. She will be dearly missed by all of them.
Survivors include son Martin Green and wife Michele of Artesia; son-in-law Gary Nelson of Artesia; grandchildren Brienne Green of Artesia, Deven Nelson and wife Solana of Rio Rancho, and Jorden Nelson of Artesia; a great-grandchild on the way; and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 47 years, Virgil, on Sept. 22, 2003; daughter Rhonda Nelson in 2021; son-in-law Bobby Richardson in 1984; brothers John R. Gray, Wendell Gray, Chester Gray, Doyle Gray and Joe Gray; sister Jeffie France; and special niece Terry Chandler.
