Ed Havins

Services are scheduled at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, at First United Methodist Church for Thomas Edgar Havins, Alto, New Mexico.

Mr. Havins, 95, died Sunday, November 9, 2014 in Artesia, New Mexico.

Rev. Monty Leavell will officiate at the services with burial at Woodbine Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Vernon Asbill, Dave Swope, Ronnie Jones, Dr. John Obermiller, Joe Dee Fanning, and Jed Fanning. Honorary pallbearers will be John Obermiller, Nick Nicholas, Ronnie Null, J.T. Jackson, James Guy and Steve McCutcheon.

Visitation will be at Terpening Son Mortuary beginning at 12 p.m. Wednesday.

Ed was born June 19, 1919 in Santo, Texas the son of Edgar Holt Havins and Stella Black Havins. He was an Artesia resident from 1938 to 1991, moving to Alto, NM in 1991.

He was owner and operator of Artesia Furniture Store which he founded in 1946. He graduated from Hope High School in 1937. He held the state record in the 440 yard dash for many years representing Hope High School. He was a member of the Baptist denomination, Eddy Co. Sheriffs Posse, Artesia Chamber of Commerce, past Businessman of the year. Ed loved to hunt, fish and rodeo, horses were his passion and he owned a ranch in the Cloudcroft area and a farm for many years north of Artesia.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and soninlaw Johnny Fanning.

Survivors include a son Eddie Havins and wife Carol of Chandler, Arizona daughter Gerene Fanning of Artesia 5 grandchildren Jed Fanning, Joe Dee Fanning, Jill Carpenter, Chad Havins, and Alexa Havins Bruening 10 greatgrandchildren Brittney Smith, Caleb Carpenter, Trevor Carpenter, Jael Clark, Jared Fanning, Haylee Neel, Lynzee Kelly, Keira Havins, Lexington Bruening, and Zane Bruening 2 greatgreatgrandchildren Livy Smith and Kobe Kelly.
