Dorothy Scott

A service for Dorothy Scott, age 96, of Artesia, New Mexico, is scheduled for Monday, February 20, 2012 at 10 am at the First Baptist Church. The Rev. Rick Sullivan will officiate.
Dorothy passed to her heavenly home on Sunday morning, February 12, 2012 in Newport Beach, California where she has resided the last four years. Pallbearers will be her grandsons and greatgrandsons, Bryan Scott, Zach Sherwood, David Smith, Zane Scott, Dustin Smith and Steve Sherwood.

Dorothy Scott was born August 27, 1915, on a farm near Garrison, Iowa, to Andrew G. Mowbray and Hazel Green Mowbray. Dorothy was a teacher and began her career at age18 in a oneroom rural school in Iowa with seven grades. During WWII when her husband was away in the army, she worked in a bomber plant in Michigan and Toledo, Ohio.

She came to New Mexico with her former deceased husband Robert Earl Scott in 1951 living in Roswell for 13 years and in Artesia since 1964. She taught school for ten years in Iowa and 24 years in Roswell and Artesia. Dorothy earned a twoyear elementary degree from Iowa State Teachers College and her Bachelors Degree from Adams State College in Alamosa, Colorado. She was past president of the Retired Teachers Association and a member for many years of the National Story League and helped with Junior Story League. Her daughter and grand daughter were also members of Junior Story League.

Survivors include her son William Scott and wife Peggy of Lake Arthur and a daughter Tana Scott Sherwood of Newport Coast, California. She has 3 grandchildren Bryan Scott and wife Nicole of Austin, Texas, Shaunna Smith and husband David of Clovis and Zach Sherwood of Dallas, Texas. She has 6 great grandchildren: Zane Scott, Lana Scott, Dustin Smith, Caylie Smith, Kamryn Smith and Breelie Smith.
She has one brother surviving Dale Mowbray and his wife Grace of Atlanta, Georgia with many nieces and nephews. Her sister Isabelle Starke and husband Alvin Starke and brother Jim Mowbray and wife Inza are deceased.
