Donald Fanning

Services are scheduled at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, July 2, at First Baptist Church for Donald E. Fanning of Artesia, New Mexico. Mr. Fanning, 88, died Saturday, June 28, 2003 at his home. Rev. Galen Isaacs, Rev. Walt Isaacs, Rev. Travis Allen, and Rev. Rick Sullivan will officiate at the services. Burial will follow at Woodbine Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons Jerry Donald Fanning, Jr., Gary Edward Fanning, Jr., Jed Fanning, and Joe Dee Fanning, and great-grandsons Jared Levi Fanning and Blake Donald Fanning. Honorary pallbearers will be grandsons-in-law David Braeutigam, Dean Carpenter and Steve Stamps and great-grandsons Jefery Fanning, Caleb John Carpenter, and Trever Dean Carpenter. Mr. Fanning was born January 1, 1915 in Dayton, New Mexico; the son of John Henry Fanning and Mabel Elizabeth Stedman Fanning. He graduated from Artesia High School in 1934. On January 1, 1935 he was married to Kathryn B. Lankford in Carlsbad, N.M. She preceded him in death October 31, 1996. He was also preceded in death by his parents; and by a brother-in-law Leon Clayton. He was a farmer and rancher and received the Outstanding Conservation Farmer award in 1978; was a member and served on the board of directors of Artesia Alfalfa Growers Association; was a board member of Central Valley Electric Co-Operative; and was a charter member of Artesia Elks Lodge 1717. Survivors include sons Jerry Donald Fanning, Sr. and wife Lela of Artesia, Gary Fanning, Sr. of Artesia, and Johnny Fanning and wife Gerene of Artesia; a sister Lois Clayton of Artesia; grandchildren Jerry Donald Fanning, Jr. and wife Donna of Artesia, Tawnya Braeutigam and husband David of Arlington, Texas, Kathy Stamps and husband Steve of Artesia, Gary Fanning, Jr. and wife Mary of Artesia, Jed Fanning and wife Susan of Albuquerque, N.M., Joe Dee Fanning and wife Janlee of Artesia and Jill Carpenter and husband Dean of Artesia. He is also survived by 11 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and by longtime caregiver Bernice Caldera of Artesia. The family suggests that memorials be made to the Baptist Children's Home - P.0. Drawer 629 - Portales, NM 88130 or to the charity of choice.
