David Charles Black Services are scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 11, at 1409 W. Main St., Artesia, for David Charles Black of Artesia.
Mr. Black, 55, passed away Thursday, Oct. 13, 2016, in Lubbock, Texas. Cremation has taken place in Lubbock and cremains will be placed at Woodbine Cemetery.
David was born in 1961 in Winnsboro, Texas, to Truman Lamar and Mary Francis (Gray) Black. He spent his early years in Texas until 1975, when he and his mother moved to Artesia. David graduated from Artesia High School in 1979.
Anyone who knew David knew he had a strong-willed personality, lots of determination, and, at times, was stubborn. He was a fighter and scared us many times as he was battling COPD. His health did not shadow his big heart, his love for food, or his friends and family, even though he tried hard to hide it at times. He loved to appear strong and valued his independence.
David was a jokester and enjoyed teasing and making people laugh. He enjoyed talking about his past and was proud of all his accomplishments. He missed his mother dearly, as he often talked about her. David enjoyed his evenings in his most prized possession, his mother's chair.
He loved having long conversations about his favorite movies and shows, such as "Star Trek," any Steven Seagal or Nicolas Cage movies, and "Starsky and Hutch." He was an avid sci-fi lover. His dream was to attend a Star Trek convention someday. His dream was realized at the Comic-Con festival in January 2015 in Albuquerque. He met William Shatner, but David wasn't too impressed. The price he had to pay to meet and greet him was what didn't impress him.
David loved sports, from wrestling to football, with his favorite team being the Kansas City Chiefs. Has anyone noticed the Chiefs' winning streak lately? David loved teasing anyone's team who had lost against his Chiefs. He had a card-making business and enjoyed making cards for different occasions.
He was preceded in death by both parents and a brother, James Black.
Survivors include his sister, Lili Smart and family, of Artesia; brother Kelly Wayne Black and family of Quitman, Texas; numerous nieces and nephews; and his family at High Desert (formerly Door of Opportunity family).
