On Tuesday, November 12, 2002, Cheryl Renee Kyle Spence passed away at her home on Cottonwood, after a valiant battle against cancer. Cheryl was born on July 29, 1960, in Denver City, Texas, to Charles and Wanda Kyle. The family moved to Artesia when Cheryl was just two weeks old. She graduated from Artesia High School in May of 1978. She was an enthusiastic member of the Future Farmers of America where she served as chapter secretary and participated on judging and parliamentary procedure teams. Cheryl married Jim Spence on May 16, 1983, in Las Vegas, Nevada, and they made their home on Cottonwood for over nineteen years. She was a very creative person who enjoyed decorating their home with memorabilia she and Jim acquired at auctions they loved to attend together. Cheryl was a member of the Eddy County Extension Club and Artesia Craft Club. Cheryl attended South Plains College and Eastern New Mexico University. She received the distinction of being selected as a member of the American Whos Who of College Students while attending E.N.M.U. Cheryl loved her nieces and nephews and spoiled them every chance she got. Aunt Cheryl made the best Kool-Aid ever She loved animals and had numerous pets that were extremely important to her and her life. Cheryl is survived by her husband Jim of the home; her parents Charles and Wanda Kyle of Artesia; her sister Judy Fowler and her children Jerrod, Erica and Kyla of Artesia; her cousin who was like a brother Ralph Watts and his wife Laura of Artesia; her mother-in-law Jackie Spence of Cottonwood; sisters-in-law Mary Jane Ward and her husband Larry of Hobbs, and Candy Ezzell and her husband Calder of Roswell; brothers-in-law Steve Spence and his wife Shellye and Trampas Spence and his wife Vicki all of Cottonwood; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 15th at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Terpening Son Mortuary at 611 West Grand in Artesia. The family has requested that memorials may be made in Cheryls honor to the Humane Society or a charity of your choice.
