Graveside services are scheduled at 10:00 a.m. Friday, October 21 at Woodbine Cemetery for Carl Dean Martin of Artesia.
Mr. Martin, 92, died Monday, October 17, 2011 at Heartland Nursing Center in Artesia
Reverend Jean Riley will officiate at the services. Pallbearers will be Richard Champion, Trini Castillo, Russell Wagner, Joel Wagner, Roby Zumwalt and Carlton Smith. Visitation at Terpening Son Mortuary will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday evening.
Dean was born August 20, 1919 at the family home in Artesia the son of Carl Earnest Martin and Cleo Cleta Parker Martin. Dean graduated from Artesia HS in 1937 and New Mexico State University in 1941.
He served in the United States Army and was stationed in Japan during the occupation
of Japan. After serving in the Army he worked in Wolf Creek Pass, Colorado as a
cowboy. Later he farmed in lower Louisiana before he returned to Artesia in 1958 to
care for his parents and the family farm. He was active with the horse events at the
Eddy County Fair and Jr. Livestock Show. He continued to farm the family farm until
1986. In subsequent years he worked as a cowboy for Richard Champion.
Dean was preceded in death by his mother and father, sisters Ruth Parker Martin Riley
and Evelyn Martin Wagner, niece Dana Wagner, and close friend Roy OBannon.
Survivors include nephews Russell Wagner, Joel Wagner, Brian Riley and wife GiYoung, and Denis Riley and wife Jean close friend Trini Castillo and several great nephews and nieces including Riannon Wagner, Daniel Riley and Danaeh Riley.
