Carl Eldon Barnes, 80 of Artesia, was called home by the Lord on October 2, 2016 in Lubbock, TX with his family by his side.
He was born June 9, 1936 in Clovis, NM, the son of Paul and Ethel (Pierce) Barnes.
After graduating from Fields High School in 1954, he attended New Mexico State University, graduating in 1959 with a Bachelor's Degree in crop science and in 1960 with a Master's Degree in plant breeding.
He met his wife, Jo Mare Hegglin, in the first grade and they were married in 1954 in Fields, NM.
After living for a short stint in Colorado, Carl and his family moved to Artesia in 1965, and Carl began working for NMSU as an assistant professor of agronomy at what is now referred to as the NMSU Agriculture Science Center in Artesia. He was named superintendent of the facility in 1968 and remained in that role for 34 years until his retirement in 1999. His passion for agriculture was cultivated long before arriving at NMSU. Carl grew up on his family's 1,920 acre farm, learning the value of hard work, patience, building various skills, and respecting the land. After showing livestock as part of 4-H and FFA beginning when he was 9 years old, winning numerous county awards and a grand champion swine title at the New Mexico State Fair when he was 16. Carl learned how important perseverance is inside the show ring, and out. Carl was instrumental in the Eddy County Fair now being held in Artesia instead of Carlsbad.
Carl has many accomplishments to add to a very blessed life. Among these accomplishments he received the Outstanding Senior Award at NMSU, the Fabian Garcia Award from NMSU, NMSU College of Agriculture & Home Economics Distinguished Service Award, NMSU College of Agriculture & Home Economics Fabian Garcia Founders Award of Excellence, NM Crop Improvement Association Honorary Membership and Carl also received an Honorary Chapter FFA Degree.
Carl was much known for activities around Artesia as he served on the Artesia City Council, where he served as Director of the NM Municipal League. He also served as the President of the Artesia Rotary Club, President of the Artesia West Little League, Artesia MainStreet Design Committee and was instrumental in the forming of the Marie Chase Foundation.
Carl was also very devoted to his Lord and Savior and cherished his church family at First United Methodist Church. He served as a Trustee, Staff-Parish Relations, Building Committees and Missions, Chairman of the Church Council, the Nominating Committee and Chairman of the Building Committee for the Sanctuary, Carl was also involved in the Men's Prayer Group.
Anyone that knows Carl understands his love for golf. Besides spending his retirement years enjoying the golf course, he took care of the Men's Wednesday Golf Club at the Artesia Country Club. He was currently serving as the Secretary/Treasurer of the Southeast Men's Golf Association.
Although Carl's list of achievements was many, the greatest being his family, He loved and cherished his wife, his children, but his grandchildren were his pride and joy. Carl enjoyed woodworking and home improvement projects, camping, fishing, square dancing groups, teaching round dancing, he was a faithful backer and follower of the Artesia Bulldogs.
Carl is survived by his wife Jo Marie Barnes of the family home; son Robert Lynn Barnes and wife Diana of Midland, TX; daughter Carla Carter and husband Charlie of Artesia; grandson Dusty Barnes of Uniontown, OH; grandson Jason Carter and wife Mattie of Colorado Springs, CO; grandson Cody Carter and wife Codie of Artesia, grandson CJ Carter and wife Lexi of Artesia; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and step-mother Lala Barnes.
Services will be held at First United Methodist church on Thursday, Oct. 6 at 2:00 p.m.. Burial will follow at Woodbine Cemetery. Visitation will be at Terpening & Son Mortuary beginning at 10 a.m. Wednesday.
Pallbearers will be grandsons Jason Carter, Cody Carter, CJ Carter, Dusty Barnes, and friends J.T. Jackson and Danny Panzer. Honorary Pallbearers are Carl's golfing buddies.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the food pantry at the First United Methodist Church in Artesia, NM.
