Services are scheduled at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at Penasco Elementary School for Barbara Jean Read Elkins of Dunken, New Mexico.
Mrs. Elkins, 72, died Saturday, October 20, 2012 at her home surrounded by her family.
David Brunson will officiate the services with burial at Dunken Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Stetson Elkins, Bryce Elkins, Ryan Elkins, Brannon Smith, Denny Burnett, Paul Trone, and Michael Ham. Honorary pallbearers will be Dub Cox, Shorty Green, David Chalk, Bill Elkins, Jim Elkins, D. W. Carson, Sonny Watts, Tommy Danley, Jake Van Winkle, Leon Ham, Don Bennett, and Bret Riley.
Jeannie was born May 31, 1940 in Alamogordo, New Mexico the daughter of Joseph C. Read and Ruby J. Frilick Read. She was a longtime resident of Cloudcroft, N.M. before moving to Dunken, N.M. in 1969.
On January 15, 1959 married Sam M. Elkins in Cloudcroft, N.M.
She was the OwnerOperator of the Turquoise Shop in Cloudcroft from 1974 to the present. She built her business from the ground up with her savy business skills and care for others. She established a loyal customer base that reached from across New Mexico into west Texas, even throughout the U.S. She was beloved by all who knew her for her generous spirit, driving ambition, and her genuine love and kindness for others. She was a member of the Dunken Community Church and the New Mexico Cowbells.
Jeannie was preceded in death by her parents and by a sister Claudine Carson.
Survivors include her husband of 52 years Sam Elkins daughter Shawna Smith of Ruidoso, N.M. sons Alden Elkins and wife Tami of Dunken, N.M. and Randy Elkins and wife Tracy of Hope, N.M. eight grandchildren and two greatgrandchildren.
