Averille Dew

Graveside services are scheduled at 10:00 a.m. Friday, June 5, at Woodbine Cemetery followed by a memorial service at First Baptist Church at 11:00 a.m. for Averille S. Dew of Artesia, New Mexico.

Mrs. Dew, 101, died Thursday, May 28, 2015 at San Pedro Nursing Center in Artesia.

Jim Darnell, Rob Sellers, and Rev. Rick Sullivan will officiate at the services. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of all of her bridge clubs.

Visitation will be at Terpening & Son Mortuary Thursday beginning at 10:00 a.m.

Averille was born March 13, 1914 in Putnam, Texas; the daughter of James Austin Stuart and Mary Ella (Hight) Stuart. She came to Artesia 1923 from Texas.

On February 20,1933 she was married to James F. Dew, Jr. in Carlsbad, N.M. He preceded her in death October 2, 1996. She was also preceded in death by her parents; son Jimmy Stuart Dew; sister Irene Small; brothers Wilbur, James, D.C., Ira, Garland, and John Stuart; and a grandson Mel Polk.

Averille was a homemaker and an active member of First Baptist Church. She worked in Adult Sunday School for 40 years, taught bible stories for V.B.S. and worked in W.M.U.. Averille also loved to work with her children and their schools. She was a past president of P.T.A., and has a life membership in the National P.T.A. She was the treasurer of Bulldog Parents, past president of Band-Aide Artesia band boosters, and loved to tell her stories. She was a past president of Artesia Story League two times, and enjoyed her bridge clubs.

Survivors include her daughters Yvonne Polk and husband Lloyd of Artesia, and Connie Jo Lewis of Artesia; son John F. Dew of Artesia; brother Robert H. Stuart of San Antonio, Texas; sister Drotha Marie Bruno of Chicago, Illinois; grandchildren Billy Polk and wife Cindy, Jerrie Darnell and husband Jim, Shelli Sellers and husband Rob, Lanetta Callaway, Brenna Goss, Susan Palomares and husband Valentin, Sheila Garcia, Dennis Lewis and wife Veronica, Daniel Lewis, Andrew Lewis, and Anthony Lewis; great-grandchildren Dustin and Sara Polk, Curtis Sellers, Logan Laquita Sellers, Meredith Sellers, Val, Jamey, Alexia, and Chloe Palomares, Darian Mahan, Canaan Mahan, Mischa Garcia, Bailey and Emily Callaway, Shayla and Dayson Goss, and Ricki Jon Dew, Brandi Polk, Jimmy, Josh, and Jonathan Darnell, Elena Lewis, and Antonio Lewis; great-great-grandchildren Ayden and Tinsey Polk.
