Anita Vargas

Services are scheduled at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, March 6 at El Gethsemane United Methodist Church for Anita Rivas Vargas of Artesia, New Mexico. Mrs. Vargas, 88, died Tuesday, March 4, 2003 in Artesia. Rev. Fernando Sanchez will officiate at the services with burial at Twin Oaks Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Mrs. Vargas grandchildren. She was born July 6, 1914 in Carlsbad, New Mexico; the daughter of Juan Rivas and Maria Dominquez Rivas. On August 29, 1929 she was married to Joe M. Vargas in Carlsbad. They came to Artesia in 1941 from Lakewood, N.M. Her husband preceded her in death November 7, 1986. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son Martin Vargas; brothers Gilbert Rivas and Johnny Rivas; a sister Cuca Rojas; a grandson Martin Vargas, Jr.; a great-grand-daughter Crystal Lynn Getchell; and a great-great-grandson Cody Vargas. She was a housewife and member of El Gethsemani United Methodist Church, and Methodist Women. Survivors include sons Clyde Vargas and wife Elosia of Roswell and Frank Vargas and wife Angie of Roswell; a daughter Connie Bustamante and husband Manuel of Artesia; a sister Helen Chavez of California; a brother Ben Vargas of Artesia; 15 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
